First impressions count and your CV is the first impression your potential new firm will have of you.  We will assist you in tailoring your CV for particular positions, but we hope you find the following tips for drafting an impressive CV helpful:

  • The ideal length is 2-4 pages.

  • Use a conventional font e.g. trebuchet, verdana, cambria or arial.

  • Write in the third person

  • Make it succinct but comprehensive.  Avoid repetition. 

  • Use bullet points where possible

  • Use headings to break down the nature of your work into practice areas and ensure those headings are clear and consistent

  • State degree level (or any higher qualifications) obtained and the full name of the establishment from which it was gained.

  • Include details of any potential following and put an honest figure on it.  Even if a firm is not actively recruiting in a particular area they often have a watching brief for candidates who can add value to their business.

  • If you practise in house, it is helpful to include a brief description of the company and its business.

  • Include your interests and details of any foreign language proficiency. This section should be no more than a couple of lines.

  • Include details of any work permits you need to obtain or, where appropriate, whether you are to undertake the QLTT.
